Speaking of spurious, my all time favorite April Fools' prank was in the late 90's when Burger King came out with their left-handed whopper. They made ads, added it to their menu and claimed that all the condiments and ingredients were placed on the right side for the convenience of the left-handed population. It was a success (as a prank, probably not financially) as they had people ordering left-handed whopper months after the prank.
